The Children’s Museum of Southern Oregon - Outdoor Museum Space
Our goal for the outdoor museum space is to create a place where kids can learn and experience nature (or as close as we can get in a built environment) through play. Our theme is centered around discovering the nature and mystery of Southern Oregon. So far for play areas in the outdoor space, we are creating three different bioregions representing the forest, the river, and the mountains.
The river is represented by a sinuous water play stream that integrates boulders, interactive implements, and a beach entry. Kids will be able to control the flow/release of water from our "headwaters". In the sand area we have earth movers, a to-scale mammoth to uncover, and boulders for climbing. This is connected to a loose parts area.
Our forest is filled with mystery. It will have large scale flowers made of steel overhead and a lush shade garden underneath. Our intention is to have Oregon mythological creatures hidden within the undergarden. This is also attached to woven willow structures for play and a possible under-hill (hobbit) house. We also have a music garden in the forest area and a build-it campground where the kids can assemble a campsite and play with loose parts.
The mountain consists of a large hill that has integrated log climbing, boulder scrambles, a slide, and tunnel. There are different active play elements for hanging, climbing, and balance. We are also including a tree fort structure that is more themed play.
We have an amphitheater that will be used for classroom time or museum shows and is integrated into the mountain's hill. The stage will have a backdrop/bandshell assembled from willow or sticks. Throughout the landscape we have ornamental gardens that will engage the children's senses and imagination.
