Butler Creek
Ashland Hillside Sculpture Garden
Located in the hills of Ashland, this project represented a unique and expeditious challenge. Terrain partnered with Solid Ground Landscape to create a sculpture garden and event space to fit 120 guests, with a completion date only three months away. The result of which was a garden that capitalizes upon the expansive views from the property and is a resting place for the myriad artworks that the owner enjoys.
The existing dipping pool and fire feature terrace was extended out from the hillside, bordered by a dry-stack boulder wall. Low maintenance and low litter plants were grouped towards the house, providing unimpeded views of the valley and vineyard below.
Dry-stack stone seat walls cut through the landscape and define large event plazas. Sable sculpture plinths emerge from plantings both uniform and diverse. To provide a terminus for the central axis of the main event terrace, a mature Bur Oak was imported from California and delivered by crane.
At the end of the three month process, the owners celebrated the emergence of their envisioned sculpture garden with the event for which it was designed.
